Gridiron 2020 was a success;

Watch out! Here comes Gridiron 2022

“Gridiron 2020: Socially Distant” was a creative (we like to think) and financial success despite some early doubts about its virtual venue. Thanks to our fine sponsors — WellMed, University Health, H-E-B, VIA Metropolitan Transit and the San Antonio Express-News — and our ever-faithful fans, we raised money for scholarships.

We weren’t able to put on a show in 2021; the coronavirus was too, well, too, — oh, let’s not talk about it. But we are SO ready for Gridiron 2022!

THE A-TEAM IS BACK

They’re a little weary and maybe a bit worse for the wear, to be the brutally honest people we are, but the thought of a new Gridiron has our leaders energized! The creative mind of Entertainer Extraordinaire Michael Quintanilla is bursting with ideas, as are the brains of Director/Choreographer Francisco Saucedo Jr. and Executive Producers Nora López and David Elizondo.

The show will be back on stage this year, and “Gridiron 2022” is sure to be another tour de farce, folks! Start saving those nickles and dimes and make plans to join us at a venue to be announced in the near future. More details to come!

As always, it’s all for a good cause: scholarships for the next generation of truth-tellers, the journalists.

Over the years, the Society of Professional Journalists – San Antonio chapter has awarded tens of thousands of dollars to scores of college students and our wonderful, long-suffering audiences have been the reason we’ve been able to do that.

Last year, the nonprofit was able to give out seven scholarships for the 2021-22 scholastic year to students attending Texas A&M – San Antonio, Texas State University, Trinity University, the University of the Incarnate Word and the University of Texas at San Antonio. And we’re looking at giving more scholarships this year, even though we didn’t have an event last year.

We and our scholarship winners thank you! We’re going to need your help, though, to replenish the treasury so we can continue to help these worthy students. So keep an eye out for information on how to donate to SPJ-SA — coming soon! — and on how to support Gridiron 2022. Ticket and sponsorship info will be coming out in the summer.

Meanwhile, enjoy the sunny weather before it gets too blazing hot and we’ll see you in the fall!
