Scholarships are Available!
The Society of Professional Journalists San Antonio Pro Chapter gives several scholarships annually to deserving students studying journalism/communications. We want you to apply! The Scholarship Application deadline is 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2018. We will announce winners by the end of April 2018.
Who is eligible for scholarships?
Applicants must attend a San Antonio/South Texas college or university or have a permanent residence in the San Antonio/South Texas region, which includes San Antonio, Seguin, New Braunfels and San Marcos. If you are unsure of your qualifications, please contact the scholarship coordinator Susana Hayward at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Applicants must major in mass communication or journalism or else have a demonstrated interest in journalism through work samples.
Applicants must enroll in college full-time (12-hour course load or more per semester) during the entire 2018-2019 academic year.
Applicants must submit with the application form all required transcripts, resume, autobiography and work samples.
Immediate family members of SPJ San Antonio Pro members are not eligible for consideration.

Accompanying Samples and Documents
In addition to completing their application with samples of work from their work in the field, applicants must obtain letters of reference from professionals with knowledge of the student’s journalism/communication work. These letters must be emailed directly to scholarship coordinator Susana Hayward at email@example.com.

You will receive email acknowledgement of your application in minutes and personal acknowledgement within 48 hours after submission.
SPECIALTY – CHOOSE ONE:
- Print journalism
- Broadcast – Television
- Broadcast – Radio
- Visual Arts/Multimedia – Photojournalism, Graphic Design, Website Design (Choose at least one)
Include education, work history, internships, awards, other scholarships, and any journalistic or communications work. A second page with references is optional, but appreciated.
Limited to 500 words, please explain why you want to pursue journalism and how scholarship money will help you in that pursuit. Include any other activities, jobs held while in school, and/or personal experiences you think might be relevant.
___Two Letters of Recommendation:
Letters must be printed on letterhead and be submitted from individuals who are familiar with your journalistic or academic work. Letters from family members will not be considered.
Include transcripts from each college or university you have attended unless grades from previous schools appear on current transcript.

REQUIRED WORK SAMPLES:
___ Print – Print Journalism: Two writing samples. Published work is preferred, but journalism class work may be considered. Please email attachments of your work as PDFs or as web links.
___ Broadcast TV – Script and five-minute maximum TV news story, written or produced by the applicant. Music videos will not be considered. We prefer samples be uploaded to an online video site like YouTube or sent to us in a format we can download.
___ Broadcast Radio – Script and audio story, five minutes maximum, written or produced by the applicant. We prefer samples in an MP3 or similar format. Online links to work will be accepted.
___ Visual Arts – Two samples of photographs, graphic design, multimedia or website design. Website links or electronic files may be provided.
If online access to any of these work samples is password-protected, provide a User ID and password so judges can access the material.
DEADLINE: Applications must be submitted as a complete package by March 31, 2018. Incomplete packages will not be judged. Scholarship winners will be announced by the end of April 2018.

At the national level, SPJ offers numerous awards, fellowships and internship opportunities to students, faculty and practicing pros. Cash awards run as high as $75,000. Members can apply for most of them on behalf of themselves. Some represent opportunity for any non-member journalist to be recognized for stellar work and contribution.
